Is That Good Enough?

The question above was posed about the 2015 Texas Aggies on ESPN’s College GameDay. In the 2014 campaign, the Aggies were blown out by the Alabama Crimson Tide, 59–0. As the Aggies prepared to face their SEC rival at Kyle Field, the commentators discussed if the changes made on the defensive strategy and personnel would be good enough for the Aggies to defeat the 2015 Crimson Tide. Commentators can always speculate and compare the previous year’s squad against the current year’s, but until it plays out, it is all only speculation.

Many people have the same question about their faith. They approach faith and God and the afterlife with the uncertainty of being good enough. They wonder, in their quiet moments when no one else is with them, When this life is over, have I performed well enough?

The beauty of the Christian Good News is that it begins with bad news. It declares that you are not ever going to be good enough. Romans 3:23 states, “Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” The bad news is clear: your efforts to please God are not enough.

But the gospel doesn’t stop there. It is good news. If you keep reading, you see that Romans 3:24-25 states, “Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.” You are not saved by your good works, but by putting your faith and trust in the work that Jesus did for you on the cross. Be justified by putting your faith in him.
