From Blunder to Blessing

Without Trevone Boykin, the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs struggled to find their way in the 2016 Valero Alamo Bowl. Boykin, who had led his team for multiple seasons, was sent home due to an assault charge stemming from a bar fight. Now backup quarterback Bram Kohlhausen had a chance to redeem Boykin’s blunder and turn out a victory.

Kohlhausen, who lost his dad in November 2015, led his team back from a thirty-one-point deficit to tie the game and push it into overtime. Getting the ball first, the Horned Frogs scored a touchdown. The Oregon Ducks fought back, but after three overtimes, the Horned Frogs were the Alamo Bowl champions. In a classy, gracious move, Kohlhausen dedicated the victory to Trevone Boykin, who missed his last college start because of his bad choices.

The gospel of Christ redeems us, too. Ephesians 1:13-14 tells us, “You Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.” Our Lord takes our blunders and forgives them through his death on the cross. Once we receive his forgiveness, he grants us a life we don’t deserve, dedicating himself to us by giving us the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing our victory for all eternity.
