Eric’s Seven Men

New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas tells the story of seven great men in history, including George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his book Seven Men: And the Secret of Their Greatness. Metaxas says of these men, “I was looking for seven men who had all evinced one particular quality: that of surrendering themselves to a higher purpose, of giving something away that they may have kept.”^a

Do you know what makes a man great? Greatness in men comes from a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of others. In John 15:13, Jesus says, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus serves as an excellent example of this sacrificial love. How can you follow his lead? Begin at home by serving your wife and children. Then find ways to serve in your community, sitting on boards and volunteering as a tutor or coach. This sacrificial love should also be evident in your work or service to the country.

In an era of masculinity being under assault, we desperately need men who will stand, serve, and sacrifice for a greater good and a greater cause. Men, let’s stand and be the men we were created to be, laying down our lives for those around us!

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
