Earning Their Respect

Peyton Manning learned a hard lesson at the University of Tennessee. He found himself unable to lead his new team, when as a freshman who started eight games, he couldn’t get his teammates to respond to his verbal challenges. It took a while, but Manning learned that to get the team’s respect, he had to earn it through hard work.

After fourteen seasons in the NFL, Manning found himself with a new team, the Denver Broncos. He indicated that it felt like a similar situation to that of going to Tennessee. As a result, Manning committed to earning the respect of his new teammates. He did this by getting to work early and hitting the weight room hard. He stayed humble and gave it his all so that his teammates could see his passion for the game and his commitment to the team. In his first season with the Broncos, he was voted team captain and ultimately led the team to the Super Bowl two times, winning it once, during his four years in Denver.

Just because you have a title doesn’t mean you have respect. Respect is earned. It is given to the one who works harder, invests more, and cares the most. Romans 13:7 states, “Give to everyone what you owe them.” When you invest with passion and hard work, you will see those around you begin to give you the respect you are due. So focus on what you can control, and you will have the respect that you need.
