Driving The Fairway

Driving the Fairway

A long-flying, straight drive from the golf tee is a thing of beauty. People line fairways to get a glimpse of these amazing shots by the best golfers. Television cameras capture these beautiful shots over and over again for the fans tuning in from their living rooms. Many amateurs spend countless hours attempting to emulate these satisfying feats of athleticism.

Yet every golfer knows that one degree of error can turn the flight of perfection into a disaster. Over the length of a drive, a change that seems slight or insignificant at the tee creates a bad lie, or worse, an out-of-bounds drop. That simple degree of error is exacerbated over the length of a two- or three-hundred-yard shot.

Let us apply these same principles in our faith walk. It takes a conscious effort to maintain a “straight” faith, as it does to achieve a straight drive. Let us avoid bad habits that seem slight and insignificant so that we won’t get off course in our lives, fearing this error more than we dread being out-of-bounds on the golf course. Let us focus on walking in the fair way of life, just as we seek to land our drives in the fairway of the golf course.

How are we to do it? Proverbs 11:5 says, “The godly are directed by honesty; the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.” May we seek to walk blamelessly and straight before his righteousness, acknowledging him in all our ways!a

The godly are directed by honesty; the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.
