C’mon, Man

The guys on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown have made the phrase “C’mon, man!” a part of our everyday vernacular. This segment of the show is one of my favorites, because it features something absurd from the world of sports.

As I sat at my local car dealership getting a few last-minute tune-ups for my wife’s truck, I had a “C’mon, man!” moment. Given that the car was still under warranty and the top of the lock had broken off, I asked the dealership to replace the broken part. After they performed the maintenance I needed on the SUV, the service adviser told me that the lock head wasn’t covered under warranty. He said, “Because it’s broken, we don’t cover it under the warranty.” I looked at him and said, “Isn’t that exactly what the warranty covers?”

When you are told, “Three years, 36,000 miles, bumper to bumper,” aren’t the lock heads included? C’mon, man! What good is a warranty if what’s warrantied isn’t covered? I’m still shaking my head at this one.

Does your word have conditions on it? Do you leave people saying, “C’mon, man!” in their dealings with you? Unfortunately, we have lost the art of making our word our bond. We have lost the integrity of doing what we say, even when it costs us something. Proverbs 11:1 says, “The LORD detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.” Don’t sell your reputation by breaking your word. That is too high a price to pay!
