Can a Virtuous Man Hesitate?

As we celebrate our nation’s independence today, let us recall that our liberty was not simply handed to us. American husbands and fathers left the warmth of their beds to fight the British invasion at Concord and Lexington. In his book Seven Men: And the Secret of Their Greatness, Eric Metaxas highlights George Washington’s impact as a great leader of our nation in its infancy. Upon hearing of the hundreds of casualties on both sides of the fight, George Washington penned these words to his friend George Fairfax:

Unhappy it is though to reflect, that a Brother’s Sword has been sheathed in a Brother’s breast, and that, the once happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with Blood, or Inhabited by Slaves. Sad alternative! But can a virtuous Man hesitate in his choice?^a

In that moment, Washington decided to stand up and fight for the liberty of this land. One of the things we need most in this day and time is virtuous men to stand up and fight for our families, for our faith, and for our future. In our liberty, we must remember our responsibility.

First, we should pray for our leaders. First Timothy 2:1-2 states, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” No matter what side of the aisle you are on, as a follower of Christ, you have a responsibility to pray for those in authority. Pray that they would possess God’s wisdom and govern for the common good of the people.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.
