I love the work of the team at All Pro Dad. They help guys become the men we were created to be through articles on their website.^a While reading one of their articles, “10 Acts a Chivalrous Husband Does for His Wife,” I was reminded how important these little things can be. Here are a few:

1. When walking on the street, walk on the street side of the sidewalk.
2. When it’s raining, don’t hesitate to get soaked getting her an umbrella.
3. In the mornings, take delight in the chance to make your wife’s coffee or tea.^b

This third one is my favorite. It is a joy to me to start my wife’s day off with the gift of a cup of coffee. She can easily make her own coffee, but if I ever have the chance, I take the opportunity to serve her.

Guys, these intentional acts of service create an atmosphere of blessing in your relationship. I call it the “principle of intentionality,” which declares, “Today, I have the opportunity to serve and bless my spouse.” You will be amazed at the way your wife reciprocates when you build this principle into your daily life. If you model this for your sons, they, too, will pick up on it when they begin to get involved in relationships. This will also set a great example for your daughters, so they know what qualities to look for in a future husband. Ephesians 5:25-26 states, “Husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.”
