Get A Move On

Get a Move On

I hate to move. Doesn’t everyone? Thinking only of the books I will have to pack makes me break out in a cold sweat. And knowing that six years of accumulated stuff is waiting to be sorted and boxed up too—well, it’s overwhelming.

But it’s not just the packing. I hate the thought of moving because over the past six years I’ve made my home in this place. I love the curve of the sidewalk leading up to the front door, the familiar squeak of the hardwood floors. I love hearing the nearby church bells ring and the neighborhood girls shriek, “Owen!” and come running when I walk my friendly puppy. I am extremely fond of the hedge of azaleas that has just begun to bloom again and of how the towering tree in my front yard bends to kiss the branches of my neighbor’s tree, making a perfect canopy between our homes.

But as much as this feels like my home, I cannot stay. I do not own it. I am only its tenant for as long as the owner wishes, and now he wishes to live here himself. So I am working hard to fall out of love with this place and find a new spot for my books, for Owen, and for me. I try to picture myself elsewhere, even though just now, I can’t. Still, I know God has a place selected, and I want more than anything to recognize it when he shows it to me. I want to go where he wants me to be. Even if it’s a place nothing like this one.

Maybe you’re in transition too. Maybe God is calling you closer to himself through uncertainty or trial or tears. Maybe he is simply asking you to follow in the steps of Abraham and go out by faith to a place he’s yet to reveal. (Maybe it will be even better than the place you now call home. I hope so.)

God won’t let us stay in one place forever. Let’s get a move on, you and I, and see what the landlord of everything has in store.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
