And Wonders of His Love

Thousands filled the streets for the annual Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center in New York. Tuning in to the made-for-television spectacle, I saw a glamorous pop singer step to the microphone, bejeweled and sporting a long white fur coat over a sequined gown. She sang “Joy to the Word” in a syncopated beat as the camera cut to children clustered near the stage, awestruck at her glittering image. Joy to the world! The Lord is come; let earth receive her King!

I wished there had been someone in my living room with me so I could have poked them and said, “Did you hear that? She said ‘Lord’! She said ‘King’!” The singer’s star power overshot the real message of the song, but she sang the words just as they were written. Cynical me imagined she’d just repeat the first verse a dozen times or so until the next performer was cued for the camera, but I was wrong. She trilled right into the next verse, and then the next: He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love. . . .

The message to those on the streets of New York City (and the national television audience) was an age-old one not usually embraced in the public square: God is on his throne, ruling with truth and grace. He engineers the movements of history and the choices of men—and in all these things the nations are proving two undeniable realities: the glories of his righteousness and the wonders of his love.

Sometimes his righteous glory bursts and blazes like a million sequins on as many glitzy gowns; sometimes his wondrous love glows like the light in one child’s eyes. The glories are big. They are hard to miss. But the wonders are small—and we walk right by hundreds of them every day!

Why not resolve to tune your heart to God’s presence and notice as many of them as you can today? They’re there. You’ll see them: wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.

Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders?
