Getting Him On Your Team

Again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

IF YOU ARE MARRIED, having a supportive spouse is vital to your ongoing success. If you are going to overcome a habit or your past or step into the future God has designed for you, it is all easier if your spouse is on your team. What kinds of things win your spouse over?

Let’s look at the model the Proverbs 31 woman left: “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. . . . Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land” (Proverbs 31:10-12, 23, NIV).

Her husband feels she is worth much more than rubies because:

• he has full confidence in her;
• he isn’t lacking anything he needs;
• she brings him good, not harm;
• he is respected among the public leadership.

As you reach toward your stars, does your husband still feel like he puts stars in your eyes? Looks like the Proverbs 31 wife made sure her husband had all the basics covered—at least everything that mattered in the public eye.

What he needed was there when he needed it (clean socks and underwear, the kids’ needs being met and doing well in school, etc.). This doesn’t mean she handles every detail, but she has made sure there is a system in place to get the needs met. You can delegate some to your spouse and the kids, and you can hire some out; but somehow you need to make sure he has confidence in both your dream and the dreams you have together.
