A Prayer For Humility

A prayer for Humility

When I’m struggling with pride

Heavenly Father,

Pride has tripped me up today. Whenever I think I’m invulnerable to sin, I’m giving the devil the key to my heart and setting myself up for a fall. Forgive me for my pride, Lord. May I always have the humility to recognize my own failures and be sorrowful over my sin. I need you desperately, and I want to give you my whole heart. Open me up to be used for your purposes—not because I am especially gifted but because you can work through me. When I try on my own to seem important, I run into trouble. But you promise that when I humble myself before you, you will lift me up.

[God] gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. . . . Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. James 4:6-10
