A prayer about Loyalty

When I want to express true friendship through loyalty

Loving God,

I’m thankful for my friendships with other women. It’s easy to be a friend when things are going well, but I don’t want to be a fair-weather friend, leaving when I’m no longer benefiting from the relationship. I know that true friendship is characterized by loyalty. Teach me to be available to my friends even—or especially—in times of their distress or personal struggle. Help me to follow the wonderful example of Ruth, whose loyalty and commitment to Naomi went far beyond what was expected of her. I pray that my loyalty to the friends you have given me will pass the test of adversity. May my faithfulness to friends in times of trouble be an encouragement that will give them a glimpse of your eternal faithfulness.

[The women] wept together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye. But Ruth clung tightly to Naomi. “Look,” Naomi said to her, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods.
