A prayer about Paid Debt - Rejoicing for Christ’s sacrifice

MY SAVIOR,

“My debt is paid, it is paid in full”—a line we sing in church—hit me in the heart. I was paying bills and struggling with how to stretch my income to match my outgo. With credit cards, I accumulate debt so quickly. So as usual I was thinking about how nice it would be if some benevolent stranger would take care of all of it, pay all those pesky bills, just like in those television shows. Then I remembered the song lyrics and thought, That’s exactly what Jesus did for me. And my debt was infinitely greater than money owed to financial institutions—I had built a lifetime of sin and guilt. I was in debt not to creditors or even to society but to God Almighty. And the payment was eternal death. But you paid my debt in full by shedding your blood on the cross. O my precious Lord, I am so grateful. Now with every bill I pay, I will rejoice that I am forgiven—my eternal debt is paid.

Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! Psalm 32:1-2
