A prayer about Leadership - Serving like Jesus

PRECIOUS SAVIOR,

What a dramatic, powerful event. I imagine the disciples must have been confused and then humbled and honored as you washed their feet. How you loved those men! And I hear you speaking to me as I read about your actions to them. That was clearly a time of transition. You would be leaving them and going to the cross. Very soon, they would have the responsibility to take all they had learned from you and share it with the world. Their role was changing from listening and learning to teaching and leading. But you were saying that the core of their message should involve selfless service to one another and beyond. I don’t like the idea of washing feet. Yet if I call you “Teacher” and “Lord,” how can I possibly not follow your example and do what you say? Like the disciples, I want to transition to a servant-leader. So this morning I ask you to lead me to feet I can wash in your name.

[Jesus said,] “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:13-15
