A Prayer About Hypocrisy
A prayer about Hypocrisy - Watching my motives
MY SAVIOR,
This morning I feel convicted about some recent public presentations of my faith, especially around other Christians. Whether I am talking with folks after a worship service, participating in a class, sharing in a small group, or even having a conversation with a friend, I find myself telling about some personal spiritual practice, accomplishment, or victory. Almost immediately after someone shares an experience, I seem compelled to add mine (only better)—almost a Christian one-upmanship. Then later, like right now, I feel like such a hypocrite because I know my real motive was to look good, to somehow demonstrate to everyone how pious and devoted I am. I feel foolish, Jesus. I know you forgive me, but I also need your help. Remove my selfish pride and help me focus on others, listening to their stories and affirming their spiritual progress. I understand that you don’t want me to keep my faith a secret because people must hear the gospel. But my faith-sharing should be about you, the Cross, the Resurrection, and grace, and nothing I have done.
When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. Matthew 6:5
