A Prayer About Sleep

When I prepare to go to bed

DEAR LORD,

I remember as a child praying, “Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” The theology is questionable, but the sentiment is right—trusting you for the soul’s safety and destination. As an adult, I have a much clearer understanding of who you are: all powerful—you certainly can keep me secure; all knowing—nothing takes you by surprise; all loving—you love me, want the best for me, and will keep your promise to take me home. Knowing these truths about you, actually knowing you, eases the tension of the day, calms my anxious and fearful heart, and gives me peace. Because of my trust in you, I don’t have to allow potential problems and conflicts to disturb my sleep. And most important, I know my eternal destiny has been decided because I am your child. Thank you, Lord, for your presence and care. I am safe in your arms. Now I lay me down to sleep.
