A Prayer About Glorifying God

When I should praise the Lord

HEAVENLY FATHER,

You have said that your people should “do it all,” everything, for your glory. I admit that I am usually concerned about my glory—getting the credit, the accolades—but I need to think about shining the spotlight on you, thanking you for any success I achieve. Also, like most people, I tend to divide life into sacred and secular and usually keep those worlds separate. I think I know how to glorify you in those “sacred” pursuits, such as worshiping, teaching Sunday school, leading youth group, praying, and reading the Bible. But those activities comprise just a small part of my life. What about the rest? I want to bring glory to your name at work—in how I relate to coworkers, my attitude and speech, and the way I do my job. I also want to bring glory to you in how I shop, interact socially, drive, and play. But glorifying you also means in every situation, even those painful, gut-wrenching, devastating experiences. I want to, Father. I want to live and die for your glory.

I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High. Psalm 9:1-2
