A Prayer About Being Known

When I think about God’s omniscience

MY AMAZING GOD,

Admitting this is difficult, but I confess that at times I feel anonymous, as though no one knows who I am or even cares. Some days I feel abandoned and alone, even in a crowd. And at other times, in stressful situations, I feel lost. At those occasions I need to remember the powerful affirmation by David in Psalm 139. Lord, you have always known me. You know everything about me—my entire history beginning at conception and continuing right through my future; my DNA; my gifts and abilities; my sins and shortcomings; my challenges, failures, and successes; my thoughts, desires, and dreams. And you always know where I have been, where I am, and where I will be. I am not lost but found. I am not abandoned but wanted. I am not anonymous. And as David says, “You go before me and follow me”—my ever-present ally and friend. Thank you, Father, for creating, loving, watching, guarding, and guiding me. I am known; I am loved; I am yours. And now I can sleep in peace, fully resting in you.

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! Psalm 139:1-6
