A Prayer About Balance

When I need to order my life

DEAR GOD,

I notice that if I’m not careful, my life can begin to spin out of control, much like a lump of clay on a potter’s wheel with too much clay on one side. I can spend so much time on the relational, social side of life that I neglect my emotional health or intellectual development. At other times, I can become so engrossed in learning that I neglect my relationships. And when I decide to shape up physically, those workouts can consume much of my time and interest. I can even pack my schedule with Christian activities and become unbalanced in that sector. When I read in the Gospel of Luke about Jesus’ life, I see that he grew mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially—in all four areas. Like Jesus, I need balance, developing every facet of life, with him at the center of everything. Help me, Father, to be disciplined and to make wise choices, knowing when to say no and when to say yes. And help me see how you relate to all aspects of my life.
