Worth a Second Look

Have you ever seen a movie and hated it but then, upon a second viewing, changed your mind? Usually it’s because unmet expectations in your first viewing left you disappointed. But in being prepared for those flaws the second time around, you noticed what was good about the film, and maybe you ended up liking it.

How we view our parents is a bit like this. We grow up with high expectations for who they should be. But being the frail humans they are, they rarely meet those expectations. As you grow older, try giving them a second look. As long as you’re aware of their flaws going in, you’ll learn to appreciate their strengths.

How you view your parents matters. Perhaps most important, as your first caregivers and objects of love, your parents are your first picture of God. Could the way you see your parents affect the way you see God?

Maybe your parents aren’t the only ones worth a second look.
