Rich Mullins had finally made it.

After slaving away in Nashville as a songwriter and recording artist, he had some number-one hits. His studio told him he could finally write his own ticket! Headlining his own tour, millions in income, a new house, new car, the works. He’d achieved the American Dream.

And he told them no thanks. He left Nashville, went back to college, and then moved to an Arizona single-wide to live his dream of simplicity.

In 1997, Rich was tragically killed in an automobile accident. He was part of the rat race, but escaped to pursue the happiness that only comes through a singular devotion to God and to the least of these.

Simplicity is a gift. But it’s a gift that’s only received when we choose to give away what the world thinks matters.
