Release Your Inner Nice
The Lawrence Welk Show was a program featuring big band music and other traditional fare. The costumes and hairstyles now seem comical. The melodies, the dancing—it all seems terribly corny compared to the TV of today.
Today the culture of cool is entertained by the grit and grime of the “real world”: illicit sex, graphic violence, backstabbing, vindictive selfishness.
Old shows like Lawrence Welk are just nice. And while nice might feel like too simple a word, it reminds us that there is more to us than our animal instincts. There is a purity and brightness of spirit worth celebrating too.
The behavior we see in today’s media does exist, but if that’s our main focus, we’ll be cool in a world without hope, a world that has abandoned any possibility that nice could ever exist again.
You can still catch Lawrence Welk on TV. Turn it on sometime. Have a laugh at its hokey packaging. And release your inner nice.
