Objects Are Closer Than They Appear

Here’s another visual balancing act to consider.

When you’re driving, you don’t just look forward. You also look back. You lift your head to look into the rearview mirror. You shift your eyes back and forth to the side mirrors. You twist your head to look for blind spots. This helps you when changing lanes, and it helps you in adjusting your speed to remain at a safe distance from other cars.

But what would happen if you spent more time looking backward than forward? You might, by some chance, make it a little way. But pretty quickly, you’d crash.

Too often, our attention is stuck on the rearview mirror. The objects from our past, while they appear to be years behind, have a much closer hold on our hearts and minds than we realize.

Looking back is necessary for moving forward. Just remember to spend far more time looking in the direction you’re heading.
