Loving Your Enemy
Loving Your Enemy
Forgiveness is one thing. Getting along is another.
There are people you just can’t stand. You’re pretty sure they talk about you behind your back. You don’t respect them, and they don’t respect you. You suppose you can forgive them for their selfish, vindictive ways, but their very existence still irritates you like an itch you can’t scratch.
The life that matters is about going above and beyond, including with your enemy. Stop dehumanizing this person as simply an object of your annoyance. He or she is to be valued and loved just like anyone else.
No matter how strong the indifference or hate, it will cower in the face of love. Smile the next time you see that person—and mean it. Ask how she’s doing. Bring him a gift and expect nothing in return. Take her to lunch and ask her to tell you her story.
You may just shock this person into an unlikely friendship.
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” —Matthew 5:44–45
