Acceptance Versus Expectation
Acceptance Versus Expectation
Many of us are more than aware of certain flaws—age spots, the newest wrinkle, the distorted shape of our nose. And we are also aware of the internal flaws—a lack of discipline, selfishness, how often we’ve tried and failed.
We shouldn’t ignore our weaknesses, but it matters how we interpret them. Our best interpretation comes from knowing the difference between acceptance and expectation.
You’ve seen the tension in those you love and respect. Your parents. Your favorite teacher or coach. They accept you for who you are, flaws and all. But they also expect more of you. They want you to rise above, accomplish, and overcome.
God is the same way. He made you and accepts you for who you are. But He also expects you to reach higher to experience the life that matters.
Rest in the peace of God’s acceptance. And use His expectations for your life to trade your imperfect ways for His perfect will and care.
“I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” —John 14:27
