The Size Of God

The Size of God

Now to him who is able to [carry out his purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to his power that is at work within us.

Ephesians 3:20 amp

The tallest trees are the California redwoods which can grow more than 350 feet tall, reach a diameter of 24 feet, and weigh as much as 1.6 million pounds.7 In photographs, people standing at the base of redwoods look miniscule, the size of ants next to a human.

Now think about the God who created those giant redwoods. He created the vastness of the universe, including the parts we cannot see or have not discovered. He is everywhere. He stands outside time, not limited by that construct. He commands the breeze, instructs the oceans to stop on land, and orchestrates the thunderstorms. He existed before everything. With a word, he brought the universe into being, and by his great power all things hold together. We can never see the height or breadth of God and his power.

Compared to his infiniteness, everything else is miniscule. When we contemplate his might and majesty, our lives might seem inconsequential. However, the Bible tells us that the God of all creation cares about us and knows everything we go though. As the storms of life—whether they be financial crisis, homelessness, or illness—threaten to overwhelm, we can remind ourselves that our God is bigger than whatever challenges or heartaches we face. He has no obstacles. Our problem might seem insurmountable. But when we lay it at the foot of Jesus, he towers over all of it.

Don’t focus on the size of your problem. Focus on the size of your God.

Tony Evans

Howard G. Hendricks
