The Peace Of God

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7

Our world history is full of stories of people on the hunt for peace. Some people, convinced that if they could conquer their enemy they would have peace, led wars that dragged on for years. Some people are convinced that if they acquire enough money, find fame, or marry the right person, they will finally be at peace. But the Bible tells us that true peace can’t be found in earthly things. When our worlds have turned upside down through tragedy or illness and all worldly assurances fail, God’s peace remains steadfast.

Isaiah 54:10 says, “‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” These words remind us that even when everything is falling apart and we are powerless, God’s peace remains. This verse is a declaration and a promise. When we focus on God, our turbulent times fade in comparison (Isaiah 26:3).

Some of the heroes of the Bible at times appeared on the brink of devastation or annihilation, surrounded by their enemies or a sickness. Some of them at first approached their situation with human reasoning and worldly tactics and met with failure. But when they turned their focus to God and surrendered, they were able to press on through the trial, rising above the circumstances around them.

Peace is a gift from God, given to believers simply because of who God is and what Jesus Christ did for us. The promise of peace is ours for the asking.

Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God. Jesus did not promise to change the circumstances around us. He promised great peace and pure joy to those who would learn to believe that God actually controls all things.

Loving Father, please give me calm and peace in the middle of my storm. My ground is shaky, but I know you are my steady rock. Help me to remember what you have done in my past so I can move into my future with you. Amen.
