Serving Others

Serving Others

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

Matthew 16:24–26

Depression can be debilitating. Sadness can linger for days, weeks, or months. We might lose interest in activities we used to enjoy. Sometimes we experience physical changes, such as a change in sleeping patterns.

Regardless of the symptoms and severity of depression, isolation is a common byproduct. Our tendency is to withdraw into ourselves and our struggles. However, the Bible talks extensively about how Christians should live with an outward focus—in love and service to others. When we are experiencing depression, it can be hard to follow any of God’s directions, but if we act in obedience, even when we don’t want to, God will bless us.

In today’s scripture, Jesus said, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” Science supports these words. One study published in Psychosomatic Medicine revealed that giving outweighed receiving. The participants who gave to others experienced reduced stress levels and felt good.3 Helping others ultimately helps you. In fact, an increasing number of studies being published show the positive effects of helping others. Research is not necessarily saying that serving is the cure, but perhaps it is a way to experience finding life again.

Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.
