Say Yes

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 1:20

The Christian life is about surrendering to the call and will of God. If God is who he says, and if he can do what he says he can, agreeing to whatever he brings into our lives seems like a logical course of action. We’re agreeing to a life led by God. We’re agreeing to whatever he has planned and whatever challenges he already knows we will encounter.

But the challenges that enter our lives might cause us to second-guess our yes. Maybe we believed that only good things would come our way. Maybe we’re realizing that saying yes to God can be scary. It can be overwhelming. But it can also be exciting!

The Bible is full of stories of people who said yes to God without fully knowing what they were signing up for. David was the youngest of his family and worked in the fields. But God called David to be king. As amazing and incredible as that might sound, the reality is he spent years living in caves and on the run on the way to the throne, often in fear for his life. Probably not what he would have signed up for. What about Paul? Paul had a reputation for persecuting Christians, and then God called him to be one of them. Pretty sure Paul did not see that coming. Both people surrendered to the will of God even when it wasn’t easy, and the outcome was better than they could have imagined.

Saying yes to God does not mean life will be easy. In that yes, we are signing up to be an instrument in God’s grand plan. We are signing up to leave our comfort zones and take risks, knowing that God is writing the story with a better ending than even we would write for ourselves.

Outside our comfort zone, though, is where we experience the true awesomeness of God.

Father, please forgive me for saying no to you. Thank you for the reassurance that in surrendering to you, my life is part of your design. When you ask something of me, help me say yes. Amen.
