Renewal
Renewal
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 esv
Running can feel invigorating. We feel our blood pumping and the strength of our stride. Our senses are receptive to what is happening around us. But long-distance runners will share the other side of the sport. Sometimes their bodies ache or suffer injury. Sometimes they must take a break, giving their bodies a rest. Then when they resume running, they have renewed energy to keep pace.
The trajectory to healing and wholeness can seem long. We might have done everything we know to do—consult with professionals, partner with others who have run this race—yet we hit a wall and feel as if we cannot go any further. Our pace slows from a run to a walk. Our breaks become longer until eventually we consider staying on the sidelines. But we are not done yet.
Scripture talks a great deal about relying on God to do what seems impossible. Reaching our goal of better health requires that same reliance. If we choose to wait for him, we will receive renewed energy from the Lord. We might find a new treatment. We might see improvement due to consistency in following professional advice. A friend might offer a kind word that helps us refocus and get back into the race. We get on the path at a slower pace and eventually build up our stride. Before we know it, we are running our race as if we were being carried by eagles’ wings.
If you are renewed by grace, and were to meet your old self, I am sure you would be very anxious to get out of his company.
Charles Spurgeon

God, thank you for the reminder that in you I have the strength I need on this path. Please help me to remember that I can bring my weariness to you. Please forgive me for trying to do this in my own power. Amen. |
