Only Jesus In Common

“How did we become friends?” Tori laughed as Cora jumped out of her car and began walking toward Tori. “You sparkle in the morning light!”

“I know, right? Aren’t these new shoes awesome?” Cora grinned as she opened Tori’s car door to get in. “I’ll make you into a fashionista yet. Are you nervous for your hockey game today? Thank you for inviting me, it’s fun to watch you play!”

Tori and Cora are the best of friends, and they’ll be the first to tell you that the only thing they have in common is Jesus. Cora loves sparkle and fashion. Tori loves hoodies and athletic wear. Cora curls her hair every day. Tori wears ponytails. Cora likes theater. Tori prefers sports. Cora adores New York City. Tori enjoys any place that has an ice rink and hockey.

Cora and Tori celebrate their differences rather than trying to force each other—or themselves—to be something they are not. It is their differences that allow them to see a situation from another perspective and have experiences they wouldn’t otherwise have. Because they accept one another for who they are, their friendship is uniquely special as they find humor in their preferences (without bad intent) and learn new skills as they take turns supporting one another’s hobbies and interests.

How boring the world would be if we all loved the same things, thought the same thoughts, and had the same interests! Tori and Cora are right. Finding friends who have interests and talents different than our own is a great way to see the world through someone else’s perspective, especially when you both love Jesus.

Living in harmony with others doesn’t mean we must be exactly alike. In fact, God made us individually unique, with varied interests and talents. When we are grown, he is going to scatter us throughout the state, the country, and world. He’ll put us in places to influence people around us based on the unique way he made us. Instead of trying to blend in, let’s celebrate the unique way God made us and those around us.
