Calling Out The Lies
Calling Out the Lies
When [Satan] lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
“I’ve decided not to try out for the school play. I can’t act as well as Bailey, and I can’t dance. Besides, it’s a musical, and I sound like a hoarse frog.”
Rachel read over Khalila’s early morning text as she munched her waffle. It was clear Khalila was panicking over the tryouts that afternoon after school.
Rachel quickly typed a response. “That’s not true. I’ve heard you sing a million times. You have a great voice. You can dance. And there is more than one part, so Bailey can’t play all the roles.”
As Rachel reread Khalila’s message, she started to get mad at the lies her friend was believing. At lunch that day, she pulled Khalila aside. “Don’t believe those lies, Khalila,” she gently told her friend. “You can sing and dance better than you are remembering.” Rachel’s words brought balance back and gave Khalila the freedom to rethink some of her destructive thoughts.
Satan’s lies are difficult to detect when they are mixed with a grain of truth. He will pick on an aspect of ourselves we already feel insecure about, using those truth/lie combinations to keep us from trying out for activities or from attempting something new that might be a little hard at first. He wants us to feel like we are no-good losers instead of young women of God who can do hard things.
Sometimes, God sends a friend to remind us of the truth when we are believing lies. Rachel was that kind of friend to Khalila, wasn’t she? At other times, God asks us to be the one who tells the truth to our friend. We should be girls who are constantly alert for Satan’s lies, ready to speak God’s truth.
Things to Think About
- How does Satan try to trick you into believing lies? Are you able to see a pattern in how he lies to you?
- Ask an adult who loves you how Satan tries to trick her or him into believing lies. Is there a pattern in the lies they believe?
DAILY ACT OF FRIENDSHIP
Ask God if there is someone in your life believing a truth/lie combo and then invite her over for a hangout and a long chat.
