9:5-7 “‘As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ After he said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his [the blind man’s] eyes. ‘Go,’ he told him, ‘wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means ‘Sent’). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.” As soon as this man received his sight, “the man called Jesus” (9:11) came to the forefront. Jesus became the most important person in existence. All he knew of Jesus at first was his name, and under that name was the whole horizon of his vision. Jesus was more to him than the learned Pharisees, or than all his neighbors put together. Jesus was exceedingly great, for he had opened his eyes. Fixing his mind on Jesus, he saw more in him and declared, “He’s a prophet” (9:17). He boldly said this at great personal risk, telling it to the faces of the complaining Pharisees. Soon after, he came to believe that Jesus is the Son of Man, and he worshiped him (9:35-38).
