John 21 - Every Man's Bible

21:1-14  The disciples were certainly persistent in their fishing, but doing things their way just wasn’t enough. As soon as they followed Jesus’ advice, as crazy as it sounded, they experienced abundant success. We may be struggling along on our own. We may be diligent, hardworking, and disciplined. However, if we don’t do things God’s way, no amount of hard work will bring the desired results. We may think the truth found in God’s Word seems crazy. But as we follow God’s plan obediently and with his gracious help, we will experience the abundant life he promises.

21:15-17  Just as Peter had denied Jesus three times, here Jesus allows Peter to declare his love for Jesus three times. Each time Jesus affirms his confidence in Peter by commissioning him to feed his flock. Peter was later able to fulfill this commission when he was filled with the mighty power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. He became a key leader in the early church. Though we may experience times of failure, God is willing and able to restore us—even to the point where our lives become models to others.

21:20-25  It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with others, as Peter did with John. We sometimes take solace in comparing ourselves with someone who is clearly not following God’s way. Or we may look at others and become jealous of how quickly they seem to have progressed spiritually. Focusing on the failures and successes of others is an easy distraction from our own lives. God doesn’t want us to compare ourselves with others. He wants us to look to him, look to his Word, and reflect on our own lives in light of his Word. We are to take responsibility for our own lives; then we can better progress spiritually and fulfill God’s plan for us.
