John 14 - Every Man's Bible

14:5-11  Faith in Jesus is the only way to truly know God and receive the meaningful life that he wants for each of us. Many people know all about God and Jesus Christ, but they don’t know God personally. Genuine faith is personal and relational. It is based on the truth that can be known about God through Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life.

14:15-18  God desires to have a special kind of relationship with us. When Jesus ascended to the Father in heaven, he sent his Spirit to live within his followers. This Spirit serves as our Advocate, and he ministers God’s compassion to us, brings to mind Jesus’ teachings, guides us into doing justice and knowing all truth, and brings our needs before God the Father (see 14:26; 15:26; 16:5-15). God the Holy Spirit will never leave or forsake us. He is with us at all times, and he has the power to help us overcome the problems in our lives.

14:27  Many of us are dealing with stress and anxiety, grief and loss; we long for peace of mind and heart. So did the early disciples—they were about to lose their best friend and their Messiah. Their souls were troubled, and they were looking for something to fill the void. Yet Jesus said he was leaving them with peace—unlike worldly peace, which is merely an absence of conflict. God can bring us peace even in the midst of our troubles (see 16:33).
