Both. Just as the devil tempted Jesus (Mt 4:1 – 11), the devil also tempted Judas. But unlike Jesus, Judas acted on the devil’s temptation. Ultimately Judas was responsible for his decision. Jesus called those who wanted to kill him children of the devil because they wanted to carry out [their] father’s desires (Jn 8:44).Peter needed to learn that the Messiah did not come to be served, but to serve (Mk 10:45). Peter objected to seeing Jesus perform such a menial task because, in Peter’s mind, it was not fitting for the Messiah to perform such a task. Instead, it conveys John’s humility and amazement that Jesus, the Son of God, loved him.In the beginning Judas seemed to be on the same page as the other 11 disciples, but in time he began to show signs of the direction he was heading. For example, he rejected Jesus’ teaching and began to think only of himself and material gain (12:4 – 6). Some think that by offering bread to Judas, Jesus was extending one last gesture of grace and friendship to his wayward disciple. In his first epistle, John said that believers know that they love one another by loving God and carrying out his commands (1Jn 5:2).
