What kind of work should I do?

Genesis 3:19“By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”

Acts 20:34-35“You know that these hands of mine have worked to supply my own needs and even the needs of those who were with me. And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

1 Corinthians 4:12We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living.

Ephesians 4:28If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.

1 Timothy 5:8Those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

We should choose work that we are able to do well and that will enable us to provide for our family’s needs. And if we work hard, we should be able to give generously to God and to others.

Matthew 25:34-40“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”

Whatever work we do, we should do to honor God and advance the values of his Kingdom.

Matthew 5:16“Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

We should work in a way that will cause other people to see the character traits of God in us. In other words, we should work as though we are working for God; if we do, others will also take notice.

Proverbs 13:11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.

Honest, hard work creates sustainable wealth, while instant income is rarely appreciated or carefully managed.

Romans 12:8If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

We are to do work that uses our God-given gifts and abilities. Ask those who have known you the longest and understand you best to give you their impressions of your skills and capacities.

Psalm 40:8“I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

Acts 20:24“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”

We don’t need to accomplish earthshaking tasks in order for our work to be meaningful or important to God. Our lives have meaning when we do the work God has given us to do. He can transform what the world may consider insignificant into a life-changing accomplishment. Whether we are changing diapers, running a company, cleaning houses, or pastoring a church, our work has meaning because we do it for God and share our blessings with everyone in our circle of influence.
