When should I wonder as part of worship?

Psalm 22:22, 30I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people. . . . Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.

Psalm 65:8Those who live at the ends of the earth stand in awe of your wonders. From where the sun rises to where it sets, you inspire shouts of joy.

Psalm 77:14You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.

Whether they go unrecognized or are deliberately ignored, God faithfully delivers his wonders throughout the world. Through those wonders, we recognize his presence through our worship.

Psalm 111:4He causes us to remember his wonderful works. How gracious and merciful is our Lord!

Daniel 4:1-3King Nebuchadnezzar sent this message to the people of every race and nation and language throughout the world: “Peace and prosperity to you! I want you all to know about the miraculous signs and wonders the Most High God has performed for me. How great are his signs, how powerful his wonders! His kingdom will last forever, his rule through all generations.”

To commoner and king alike, God displays his wonders and invites worship. We are humbled as we realize how easily we overlook God’s works and how patiently he opens our eyes and minds to recognize him.

Acts 2:19-22“‘And I [God] will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below—blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.”

Within just weeks of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Peter was powerfully preaching to those who were well aware of all that had transpired in Jesus’ ministry. Everything God did through Jesus was a confirmation that his death would bring forgiveness and his defeat of death would make eternal life a reality for all who placed their faith in him. The many wonders done by Jesus and his apostles would highlight and confirm the main wonder: our salvation.

2 Corinthians 12:12When I was with you, I certainly gave you proof that I am an apostle. For I patiently did many signs and wonders and miracles among you.

Hebrews 2:4God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.

Those who first carried out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) fully expected God’s participation as they spread the gospel. God would confirm their message by creating effects that could not be explained in human terms. The power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8) was evident in the lives and work of these messengers. There is no reason to believe that God has changed his approach. He still works wonders wherever the Good News of Jesus penetrates.
