Why is trust a key in strong relationships?

Proverbs 25:19Putting confidence in an unreliable person is like chewing with a toothache or walking on a broken foot.

Proverbs 31:10-11Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is worth more than precious rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.

Genesis 9:22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers.

Leviticus 6:2Suppose some of the people sin against the Lord by falsely telling their neighbor that an item entrusted to their safekeeping has been lost or stolen. Or suppose they have been dishonest with regard to a security deposit, or they have taken something by theft or extortion.

Proverbs 3:29Do not plot against your neighbors, for they trust you.

Exodus 6:9So Moses told the people what the Lord had said, but they wouldn’t listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the increasing burden of their slavery.

Titus 2:9-10Slaves must obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back or steal, but they must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.

Proverbs 20:23The Lord despises double standards; he is not pleased by dishonest scales.

Mistrust is unhealthy and painful in relationships because it causes you to constantly question the motives of others. Mutual trust strengthens and deepens relationships because you know that what they tell you is true, and that they are always acting in your best interests out of love. When you trust someone, you have total peace of mind about that person. You are free to fully enjoy the relationship. Trust is vital in your relationships with your spouse, family, friends, neighbors, leaders, and co-workers. If you can’t trust someone, there is no way you can have a truly healthy and close relationship. And if you don’t have a healthy relationship with God, it means you are not trusting him enough, and yet he is the only One who is completely trustworthy.
