How do I recover when I have given in to temptation?

Psalm 51:1-4, 7, 10, 12, 17Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. Proverbs 28:13People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

Romans 6:1-7Should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

We should hurry to humbly confess our failures and be made right with God. God is always merciful to us in our failures and awaits our repentance. No matter how often or how badly believers fail, God will welcome us back through the sacrifice of Jesus and reaffirm his commission for us to live a sinless, godly life.

Matthew 5:23-24“So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.”

If our sins involve others, we should hurry to confess to them and be reconciled with them.

Matthew 3:8“Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”

1 John 2:1-6My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Repentance is more than an admission of guilt or an apology—it’s a change of heart that leads to changes in our actions. After admitting our sin and asking for God’s forgiveness, we must recommit ourselves to obedience.

Galatians 6:1-5Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

James 5:16Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Repenting and fully recovering from failure in the face of temptation might require seeking accountability from other believers or seeking a professional counselor. It takes strength to move past the shame of failure and actively seek help, but it is the wise path to take.
