Is it sin if it doesn’t hurt anybody?

Joshua 7:1-25But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the Lord. A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things. . . . Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us?”

There is no such thing as a private sin. Our sinful actions always affect more people than just ourselves. Beware of the temptation to rationalize your sins by saying they are too small or too personal to hurt anyone but you.

Ezekiel 3:20“If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior . . . they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. . . . And I will hold you responsible.”

A watchman is guilty if he knows the enemy is coming and remains silent. We are guilty if we remain silent when we should warn another person of the consequences of his or her actions.

2 Chronicles 7:19-20“But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the decrees and commands I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, then I will uproot the people from this land.”

The sins of a nation’s leaders affect all of its citizens.

Numbers 5:5-6Then the Lord said . . . “If any of the people—men or women—betray the Lord by doing wrong to another person, they are guilty.”

Sin always hurts God.
