How powerful is Satan?

Ephesians 6:12For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms.

Matthew 8:28When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him. They came out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could go through that area.

Mark 5:3-4, 11-13This man lived among the tombs and could not be restrained, even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to control him . . . There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. “Send us into those pigs,” the evil spirits begged. Jesus gave them permission. So the evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of two thousand pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake, where they drowned.

Mark 9:20-29So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth . . . When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. “Spirit of deafness and muteness,” he said, “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!” Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. Acts 19:16 . . . And he leaped on them and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and badly injured.

1 Peter 5:88Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Satan’s power is real, it is great, and it should not be underestimated. He can terrorize as well as harm you in many ways.

Job 1:12, 20-22“All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan. “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence . . .

Job 2:6-7, 10“All right, do with him as you please,” the Lord said to Satan. “But spare his life.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with a terrible case of boils from head to foot .

Matthew 10:2828 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Satan’s power is limited, so don’t overestimate it. He cannot overcome God. Even he is an unwilling servant of God’s sovereign purposes. Fear God more than you fear anything or anyone else, including Satan.

John 17:15I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.

Luke 22:31-3231 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Satan’s power is permitted, so don’t be overwhelmed by it. He may tempt you and trip you, but keep turning to God for protection and forgiveness. You will be defeated in battles with the forces of evil on your way to winning the war with Christ.

Hebrews 2:14Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—Jesus also became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death.

Matthew 6:13And don’t let us yield to temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Romans 16:20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

2 Thessalonians 3:3But the Lord is faithful; he will make you strong and guard you from the evil one.

1 John 4:4But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won your fight with these false prophets, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Romans 8:37-39No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Psalm 99:1-2The Lord is king! Let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne between the cherubim. Let the whole earth quake! The Lord sits in majesty in Jerusalem, exalted above all the nations.

Jeremiah 10:6Lord, there is no one like you! For you are great, and your name is full of power.

Daniel 4:35All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He has the power to do as he pleases among the angels of heaven and with those who live on earth. No one can stop him or challenge him, saying, ‘What do you mean by doing these things?’

Ephesians 1:21Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or in the world to come.

John 10:29for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. So no one can take them from me.

John 14:30I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the prince of this world approaches. He has no power over me . . .

Psalm 147:5How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!

Psalm 89:7The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.

2 Chronicles 20:6He prayed, “O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!”

Satan’s power is inferior to God’s. If God is ruler in your heart, Satan cannot defeat you. At the name of Jesus, Satan must flee.
