Galatians 2:16We know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. . . . For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”

Obeying God’s commands is not what saves us from sin and gives us eternal life. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone. But when we believe in Jesus and decide to follow him, we are increasingly motivated to obey God out of love for him. We obey God not to get saved but as a result of being saved.

Hebrews 11:8It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.

Obedience is motivated by faith, but obedience itself is not the way to heaven; only faith in Jesus Christ as Savior will get us to heaven. Obedience is the result of faith, not the pathway to faith.
