Why is excellence encouraged by God? Why should we strive to be excellent?

Exodus 35:31“The Lord has filled Bezalel with . . . expertise in all kinds of crafts.”

God places great value on excellence and instills special gifts in each of us to help us become especially excellent in certain areas.

1 Chronicles 26:6Shemaiah had sons with great ability who earned positions of great authority.

Excellence is highly valued by others. Those who strive for excellence are often promoted to significant positions.

2 Chronicles 30:21-22Each day the Levites and priests sang to the Lord, accompanied by loud instruments. Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites regarding the skill they displayed.

Excellence is appreciated. It inspires us.

Nehemiah 13:13These men had an excellent reputation, and it was their job to make honest distributions to their fellow Levites.

Excellence is related to reputation. It makes you a good role model. Do you want to be known as a mediocre person? God does not want to be known as mediocre.

Ephesians 4:11-12These are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church.

Excellence engages and challenges us; it urges us to make a unique contribution.

1 Peter 4:11Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies.

Excellent works are helpful to others. For example, doctors who have strived for excellence in medical research have developed vaccines that have saved countless lives.

Psalm 98:5Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song.

Excellence is an act of worship.

1 Corinthians 9:26So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.

Excellence is an indication that we are striving to be like Jesus, who was excellent in every way.
