Genesis 16:5Sarai said to Abram, “This is all your fault! I put my servant into your arms, but now that she’s pregnant she treats me with contempt. The Lord will show who’s wrong—you or me!”

Sarai, Abram’s wife, couldn’t have children, so she gave her slave, Hagar, to Abram in order to have a child through her. Later Sarai had second thoughts and blamed Abram for so easily accepting her offer.

Exodus 32:24“When they brought it to me, I simply threw it into the fire—and out came this calf!”

Aaron’s lame excuse for making an idol—something expressly condemned by God—was that it just happened! How often we do the same thing, blaming our intentional sin on circumstances beyond our control. But the Bible clearly says that we are completely accountable for all our actions (Romans 14:12; Revelation 20:12).

1 Samuel 15:15“It’s true that the army spared the best of the sheep, goats, and cattle,” Saul admitted. “But they are going to sacrifice them to the Lord your God. We have destroyed everything else.”

Saul tried to justify his actions with the excuse that he sinned in order to do something good. His life was a story of one excuse after another. Finally, he ran out of excuses and lost his kingdom (1 Samuel 15:26) because he simply wouldn’t own up to his mistakes and admit when he was wrong.

Luke 22:60Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

Peter had an excuse for pretending that he did not know Jesus—he wanted to avoid the ridicule—and danger—of being associated with Jesus. Ironically, when we start making excuses about knowing Jesus, we are in the greatest danger of losing all that he offers.
