Can the consequences of what I say be just as significant as the consequences of what I do?

Proverbs 18:21Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.

Mark 14:66-72Peter said, “I swear by God, I don’t know this man you’re talking about.” And immediately the rooster crowed the second time . . . And he broke down and cried.

James 3:3-6We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

The consequences of your words can be just as dire as the consequences of your actions. You might not literally kill someone, but harsh words can hurt another person deeply—affecting the rest of their lives. And, like Peter, your words can also hurt you as well—affecting you, your life, and those around you. So watch your words. They can condemn you as vigorously as your actions.
