Why must I beware of competing with God?

Genesis 11:3-8“Come,” they said, “Let’s build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies—a monument to our greatness! This will bring us together and keep us from scattering all over the world.” But the Lord . . . scattered them all over the earth; and that ended the building of the city.

As absurd as it sounds, you can get so caught up in pursuing your own achievements that soon they replace God as your ultimate victory. When you build your own “Tower of Babel,” it is an act of pride as you try to show the world how good you are. Everyone knows such pursuits are ultimately doomed because you can’t take your achievements with you when you die and meet your Maker. Instead, ask God to work with you to accomplish the kind of triumphs that will last for eternity.
