What kinds of ambitions are harmful?

Matthew 4:8-10 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

Matthew 16:24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.”

Never sacrifice your faithfulness and devotion to God to pursue any ambition.

Genesis 11:4Let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.

Working to glorify yourself is an ambition that never pleases God.

Habakkuk 2:9, 12What sorrow awaits you who build big houses with money gained dishonestly! . . . What sorrow awaits you who build cities with money gained through murder and corruption!

If you work for wealth at the expense of other people’s welfare, you will experience God’s judgment.

James 4:2You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them.

Ambition that is fueled by discontent and a desire for more almost always results in harming others and dishonoring God with your life’s work. This never brings lasting satisfaction.
