The Lights Are Off But Somebody’s Home - The One Year Sweet and Simple Moments with God Devotional

The Lights Are Off but Somebody’s Home

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

John 8:12

I don’t know about you, but I take electricity for granted—until it’s dark! We have lost power in our home many times due to bad storms whose winds broke off huge branches from our beautiful trees and downed power lines. One time, my husband and I were both working on projects in different parts of the house. All of a sudden, it was so dark that we could not see our hands in front of our faces.

We stumbled around looking for flashlights and candles, hoping that the lights would come on quickly so we could finish what we were doing. Mark walked outdoors to see if our side of the street was the only one to lose power. Sure enough, the houses across the street had power, so our kind neighbor stretched a long extension cord across the road. We connected our cords to his, giving us a temporary power source for our lights that night.

God is our constant Light. He never goes out! Our connection is never breached unless we unplug from His power and choose to continue stumbling through the dark. What a reminder to us about the importance of living close to Him. Our connection with Him is our lifeline and our light. Just as my husband and I couldn’t function well in our darkened home, we need Jesus’ floodlight to illuminate our way through life.

My earnest plug: connect to Christ today in His Word by reading John 1:1-5. When we walk in His light, we will all shine brighter and be more effective for Him in this dark world!
